Bucs hurler hit in face by pitch

Pittsburgh Pirates righthande­r Ryan Vogelsong was carted off the field after being struck in the face by a pitch in the second inning of the team’s 6- 3 victory Monday against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

With the Pirates leading 1- 0 and the bases loaded, Rockies starter Jordan Lyles hit Vogelsong in the left cheek with a 92 mph fastball. Vogelsong was tended to for several minutes on the field before being taken off on a cart. The Pirates later said he was admitted to the hospital for an injury to his left eye.

Josh Harrison had two RBI singles for the Pirates.

Mets 7, Nationals 1

Bartolo Colon ( 4- 3) yielded one run and five hits in seven innings a day before his 43rd birthday, David Wright highlighte­d a fiverun third with a three- run home run and the New York Mets battered Gio Gonzalez ( 3- 2) for seven runs in five innings to wallop the host Washington Nationals.

News and notes

The Texas Rangers said outfielder Josh Hamilton will miss the entire season because he needs more surgery on his left knee. Hamilton, who has been on the disabled list all season, had surgery twice on the knee last year.

The Tampa Bay Rays said outfielder Kevin Kiermaier will have surgery Tuesday to repair two fractures in his left hand suffered while diving for a fly ball Saturday. He is expected to be out eight to 10 weeks.

The Mets put first baseman Lucas Duda on the 15- day DL with a stress fracture in his lower back. He is expected to be out at least four to six weeks.

The Kansas City Royals put outfielder Alex Gordon on the 15- day DL with a fractured right wrist suffered Sunday. He is expected to miss three to four weeks.
