91, of Elgin passed away Saturday, June 25, 2016 in his home. He was born March 9, 1925 in Tiffin, Ohio, the son of Francis P. Haefling and Helen C. Huffmon Haefling. He had been a resident of Elgin for the past 63 years. He was employed by Pfizer Pharmaceut­icals before retiring. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving as a medic for the Acorn division in Guam and was a member of the Honor Flight in 2009 to Washington D. C. from the Elgin area.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Elgin and the American Legion Post 57. He was very active in Boy Scouts as an institutio­nal representa­tive for Troop 19 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and received the St. George Award, the highest award given to a Catholic scouter. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and served as an auxiliary police officer at special events in and around Elgin. Louis loved to golf, fish, walk, garden, play bridge and visit with the grandchild­ren.

Surviving are his children, George ( Edith) of Medford, OR, Marc of Medford OR, Kathryn ( Tim) Whiston of Wauconda, IL, Gerry of Staten Island, NY, Georgette ( Chris) Hunefeld of Stockton, CA, Kerrie Goodman of Fairfield, OH, DiAnne Krueger of Elgin, Kier of Elgin, Jonathan of Elgin, Stephen Gamble of Elgin, Diane ( Denise) Graham of Elgin and Chris Pierce of Elgin; 26 grandchild­ren; 24 great- grandchild­ren with 3 more on the way; 4 sisters, Jean ( Dan) Miller, Clarann Wise, Mary Frances Young and Kathleen ( Louis) Wise and brother, Robert Haefling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille Atkinson Haefling; second wife, Norma Harker Gamble Haefling and grandson, Brandon Kelly.

Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Elgin. Burial will be private in Mount Hope Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7 from 4: 00 p. m. to 8: 00 p. m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and on Friday in the church from 9: 30 a. m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Honor Flight Chicago, the American Legion Post 57 Service officer fund or to St. Mary’s Church for masses.
