MIDWEST FISHING REPORT

LAKEFRONT SALMON/ TROUT: CHICAGO: Park Bait: West end of Montrose best for kings, as well as coho. Henry’s: Some kings and coho up and down the lakefront.

WAUKEGAN: Salmon Stop: More of a crankbait bite for kings and steelhead. Frozen roaches on bottom for browns.

INDIANA: Slez’s Bait: A few kings came up the streams, but they’re scattered from the lake to Valparaiso.

MILWAUKEE: Arden Katz: Lots of kings inside the harbor; best on crankbaits.

SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN: Tackle Haven: Cold water is expected to spark run up the rivers.

SNAGGING: Snagging for coho and Chinook opens Saturday in Illinois. It is allowed only in the north basin of Waukegan Harbor, the Winnetka power- plant discharge area, the Lincoln Park Lagoon south of Fullerton and the inner and outer harbors at Jackson Park.

AREA RIVERS: CHICAGO: Capt. Pat Harrison: Water temperatur­es dropping. More bass being caught with panfish and catfish.

ILLINOIS: Illinois Valley Outdoors: Pulling three- ways or trolling crankbaits picking up sauger and walleye. Some white bass around bridges. Crappie around pilings of island brush.

CHAIN: Triangle: Trolling with smaller crankbaits is producing more muskie. A few white bass and crappie in river on shallow turns or eddies. Some crappie and big white bass around Blarney Island. Bluegills and perch on south end of Channel. Catfish good on stinkbait or cut bait.

HEIDECKE: Tuesday is final day of fishing.

LAKEFRONT: Shoreline salmon/ trout at top. CHICAGO: Henry’s: Still small perch being caught inside harbors. Capt. Bob Poteshman: Lakers and a few other fish around the R4 and Julian’s Reef.

WAUKEGAN: Ted Boska: Mainly fishing reefs for lakers ( when winds allow).

NORTH POINT: Poteshman: Early in 120 to 160 feet, then out to 180 to 230 feet. Mainly lakers on the bottom, but a few other fish higher.

NORTHERN WISCONSIN: MINOCQUA: Kurt Justice: Walleye are good to very good, especially over rock or gravel bars in 20 to 28 feet. Muskie ( topwater and bladed baits best), crappie ( tight to drowned timber in 15 to 18 feet), pike, smallmouth ( best over gravel humps), largemouth and bluegills are good.

EAGLE RIVER: Chamber of Commerce: Sucker- fishing picking up for muskie. Walleye on deep mud flats and on deep rock humps. SHABBONA: Muskie are going in no- motor zone on bigger soft plastics. Walleye on underwater weed line ( 10 to 12 feet) on jigging spoons or Flicker Shads. Bass on topwaters or spinner baits in weeds or dam face. Catfish on chicken liver. Crappie shallow mornings, in cribs midday. Bluegills and perch shallow.

WOLF RIVER, WISCONSIN: FREMONT: Jim Popek: Largemouth and pike in backwaters. Walleye being caught drifting with jigs and crawlers. White bass at mouth of Poygan by rock wall at Partridge. Cooler water really will turn bite on.
