A banner night for LeBron, Cavaliers

LeBron James had his 43rd career triple- double, Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and the Cavaliers, who raised their championsh­ip banner and received 6.5- karat championsh­ip rings, beat the Knicks 117- 88 on Tuesday night in the NBA season opener.

James scored 19 points and added 11 rebounds and 14 assists in front of a raucous home crowd that was celebratin­g the city’s first championsh­ip in 52 years.

“This is for you guys,” James told the crowd. “This is all for you. At this point, if you’re not from here, live here, play here . .. then it makes no sense for you to live at this point,” said the three- time champion. “Cleveland against the world.”

“When this is all over and that banner goes up there, there is really only one thing left to do — repeat,” Cavs owner Dan Gilbert said. “And, go Tribe.”

Irving scored 19 points in the third quarter, when Cleveland used a 20- 4 run to take a 74- 53 lead. Kevin Love scored 23 for the Cavaliers.

Carmelo Anthony led New York with 19 points and Derrick Rose had 17. Joakim Noah started and had six rebounds and zero points in 20 minutes.

The quest to bring the NBA back to Seattle took a significan­t step with investor Chris Hansen and his investment group offering to pay for a proposed arena with private funds.

NHL Crosby back for Penguins

Sidney Crosby scored in his season debut as the Penguins rallied to beat the visiting Panthers 3- 2. Crosby, who scored on a power play, missed the team’s first six games with a concussion.

Dylan Larkin scored two goals to lead the Red Wings to their fifth consecutiv­e win, a 4- 2 decision over the visiting Hurricanes.

MISCELLANE­OUS Kentucky Derby winner dies

Monarchos, whose Kentucky Derby- winning time in 2001 ( 1: 59.97) was second only to Secretaria­t, has died in Midway, Kentucky. He was 18. He died early Saturday after emergency surgery the day before to repair a ruptured intestine.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced plans for the second phase of Ballpark Village next to Busch Stadium. The $ 220- million project, expected to be completed in 2019, will be highlighte­d by a 29- story luxury apartment building with views of the playing field.

Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the team will not have a full- time general manager after naming Eddie Romero the team’s new senior vice president and assistant general manager.
