Bernard Mims had been sentenced to 90 years in prison for the 2000 murder of off- duty Cook County correctional officer Dwayne “Bear” Baker.

Mims’ lawyer said Mims couldn’t have been the killer because he was recuperating from a shooting 10 days earlier, reports say.

The state’s attorney’s office has dropped the charges against Mims after a review of the case by the Conviction Integrity Unit, which cited his medical condition as a factor in its decision.
