Chiefs deny mishandling Smith injury

-

The Kansas City Chiefs defended their treatment of quarterback Alex Smith after he twice had his head slammed into the turf Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, sayingMonday that he passed concussion tests on the sideline and in the locker room after both of the hits.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder also said team physicians and an independent neurologist don’t think Smith suffered a concussion. Still, he will be evaluated by another neurologist this week before the Chiefs determine whether he can play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Receiver Johnson retires at 35

Tennessee Titans receiver Andre Johnson, 35, has decided to retire after 14 seasons. He ranks among the top 10 receivers in NFL history in receptions ( 1,062) and receiving yards ( 14,185) but had only nine catches for 85 yards this season and hadn’t caught a pass in the Titans’ last three games.

This and that

Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles said he’s bringing in mechanics guru Adam Dedeaux to spend two days fine- tuning his throwing motion. Bortles has struggled with his accuracy this season, throwing 12 touchdown passes and nine interceptions.

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said left tackle Jared Veldheer will miss the rest of the season with a torn triceps and safety/ cornerback Tyrann Mathieu will be out three to six weeks with an unspecified shoulder injury.

The Cleveland Browns acquired linebacker Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots for a conditional third- round draft pick. The move came a day before the NFL’s trade deadline Tuesday.
