Red Sox add setup man from Brewers

-

The Boston Red Sox obtained the setup man they wanted Tuesday at the winter meetings, acquiring right- hander Tyler Thornburg from the Milwaukee Brewers for infielder Travis Shaw, two minorleaguers and a player to be named.

Thornburg, 28, will become the Red Sox’ eighth- inning guy, setting up closer Craig Kimbrel. He was 8- 5 with 13 saves and a 2.15 ERA in 67 games last season for the Brewers.

Shaw, 26, hit .242 with 16 home runs and 71 RBI last season. He played mostly third base but also saw time at first.

In other news from the meetings, the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to terms with free- agent catcher Wilson Ramos (. 307, 22 homers, 80 RBI) on a two- year, $ 12.5million contract, and the Texas Rangers struck a oneyear, $ 11.5 million deal to bring back free- agent outfielder Carlos Gomez (. 231, 13 homers, 53 RBI).

Yankees to retire Jeter’s No. 2

The New York Yankees said they will retire legendary shortstop Derek Jeter’s No. 2 and unveil a plaque in his honor in Monument Park in a ceremony before their game May 14 against the Houston Astros. It is the last of the Yankees’ single- digit numbers.

Jeter’s number will be the 21st retired by the Yankees, by far the most of any major- league team. He helped them win five World Series titles and was a 14- time All- Star during a 20- season career that ended in 2014. He ranks sixth in majorleague history with 3,465 hits.

Tebowto play in spring games?

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said he would like former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow to play in spring- training games, even though he has a longway to go in his transition to baseball. Collins said he knows people want to see Tebow play, especially in his native Florida.

The Mets signed Tebow, an outfielder, to a minor- league contract late last season. He didn’t play baseball in college and hit .194 in the Arizona Fall League.
