Bears’ receivers coach departing
HOUSTON— The Bears are looking for their third receivers coach in as many years.
Curtis Johnson, who signed a one- year deal to join the Bears last offseason, will not return to the team, sources confirmed Monday.
Johnson was with the Bears last week at the Senior Bowl, where coach John Fox praised him.
“He builds a good relationship with the players; they all respond well to him,” Fox said. “He coaches them hard. But they want to be coached hard. Guys respond to coaches who can make them better.”
Fox gave Johnson credit for the development of second- year player Cam Meredith, who had 66 catches for 888 yards.
Hired last offseason to help Kevin White and further the growth of Alshon Jeffery, Johnson could land elsewhere. The Saints, for whom Johnson coached from 2006 to ’ 11, have a receivers- coach opening.
Brady on his dad
Speaking at Minute Maid Park during Super Bowl Opening Night, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said his father, Tom Sr., didn’t speak for him when he said that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was on a witch hunt for his son after Deflategate. He then got emotional, catching himself before trailing off.
“My dad represents his feelings because he’s a dad,” he said.
Jimmy G language course
After agreeing to wish “auf wiedersehen” to a German TV reporter, Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was asked if he could say something in Spanish.
“Is ‘ no’ Spanish?” he said, smiling.
The Rolling Meadows High School alum said he wants to reach the Super Bowl as a starter someday. “That’s been the dream since you were a little kid,” he said.
