Ramblers’ upset bid falls short
Deontae Hawkins scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, including a late goahead free throw, and Illinois State held off Loyola 65- 63 on Sunday in Normal to win its fourth consecutive game.
The Redbirds missed three consecutive shots and the Ramblers one before Hawkins was fouled by Milton Doyle and hit two free throws with three seconds left. Ben Richardson’s three at the buzzer rimmed out.
The Redbirds extended a seven- point halftime lead to 11, but the Ramblers closed to 45- 40 on Aundre Jackson’s layup, tied it at 55 on Doyle’s layup, then led 58- 57 on Donte Ingram’s three with 4: 53 left. MiKyle McIntosh’s back- to- back three- pointers put the Redbirds back on top, but Doyle’s jumper tied it at 63 with 2: 04 to go.
McIntosh scored 13 points to lead the Redbirds ( 23- 5, 15- 1 Missouri Valley). Doyle scored 17 for the Ramblers ( 17- 12, 7- 9).
Butler 82, DePaul 66
The stretch of awful play continued for the Blue Demons, who have lost their last 10 games and 15 of their last 16. Their last five losses were by at least 11 points. Eli Cain led DePaul ( 8- 19, 1- 13 Big East) with 24 points.
Nate Fowler scored 15 points to lead the host No. 24 Bulldogs ( 21- 6, 10- 5), who benefitted from a 21- 0 run that straddled halftime.
Oakland 87, UIC 75
Taj Odiase scored16 points, but the visiting Flames ( 1414, 7- 9 Horizon) committed 23 turnovers en route to its fourth consecutive loss. Martez Walker led Oakland ( 21- 7, 11- 4) with 21 points.
Wisconsin 71, Maryland 60
Nigel Hayes scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half and Ethan Happ added 20 points for the host No. 11 Badgers ( 22- 5, 11- 3 Big Ten). Melo Trimble led the No. 23 Terps ( 22- 5, 10- 4) with 27 points.
Minnesota 83, Michigan 78 ( OT)
Jordan Murphy had 16 points and 15 rebounds and Eric Curry scored all 12 of his points in the second half to lift the Gophers ( 20- 7, 8- 6 Big Ten) over the visiting Wolverines ( 17- 10, 7- 7).
MSU’s Harris out for year
Michigan State guard Eron Harris will need surgery on his right knee, ending his college career. The 6- 3 Harris, who was averaging 10.7 points, was injured Saturday.
