Schweinste­iger pays instant dividend

Bastian Schweinste­iger scored in his MLS debut, Luis Solignac got a goal in second- half stoppage time and the Fire tied the Montreal Impact 2- 2 on Saturday at Toyota Park.

Schweinste­iger, 32, was acquired from Manchester United on March 21. He headed in David Accam’s cross in the 17th minute to give the Fire a 1- 0 lead. In the third minute of second- half stoppage time, Solignac scored after a long pass from Dax McCarty from just outside the box.

“I was not nervous, but I was looking forward to play football,” Schweinste­iger said after his debut.

The Fire played the short option on a corner kick, and Schweinste­iger, who was unmarked in the box, converted.

“Perfect cross from David and the header,” said Schweinste­iger, who played the full 90 minutes.

The Impact got goals from Matteo Mancosu ( 61st minute) and Ballou Jean- Yves Tabla ( 90th).

Neuvirth collapses during game

Philadelph­ia Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth, 29, was awake and alert after being taken to Pennsylvan­ia Hospital upon collapsing in his crease early in the game against the visiting New Jersey Devils.

About 7 ½ minutes into the game, Neuvirth fell backward and landed on his back. He appeared to be unconsciou­s briefly but moved his arms and legs and sat up before being carted off the ice on a stretcher.

Rookie center Tage Thompson scored his first profession­al goal, but the Wolves ( 39- 19- 7- 5) dropped a 5- 2 decision to the Cleveland Monsters at Allstate Arena.

MISCELLANE­OUS Konta tops Wozniacki in Miami

Johanna Konta, 25, won the biggest title of her career when she beat Caroline Wozniacki 6- 4, 6- 3 in the final of the Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Florida. The No. 10- seeded Konta finished with 33 winners, compared with eight for Wozniacki. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will play Sunday in the men’s final.

Always Dreaming and Girvin each earned 100 points in the system that determines the starters in the Kentucky Derby with victories in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park and Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, respective­ly. Always Dreaming is trained by Todd Pletcher, who ultimately could have five starters in the Run for the Roses on May 6.

Sung Kang shot a 1- under 71 to hold a three- shot lead over Rickie Fowler ( 5- under 67) after the third round of the Houston Open in Humble, Texas.

Lexi Thompson excelled on a long day at the ANA Inspiratio­n in Rancho Mirage, California, taking the LPGA tournament lead while completing her second round before moving two shots ahead of Suzann Pettersen with a third- round 67.
