Hit the beach for the holiday weekend

- Kelly Lawler @ klawls USA TODAY

What’s better than going to the beach? Well, not much, but great movies that take place at the beach are pretty fun, too. It’s Memorial Day weekend, which means you might be taking in rays at the beach, or you’re wishing you were. Either way, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the arrival of summer with some beach- themed films. You’ll practically feel the salt and sand as you watch. Fruity cocktails not included.

IF YOU LOVE GREAT STUNTS AND SWAYZE: POINT BREAK

Forget about the recent remake: The story of an FBI agent who goes undercover with a group of surfers who also may be bank robbers is best experienced in the 1991 original. There’s no replacing Keanu Reeves as FBI Agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer Bodhi, who turn in iconic performances. The hair and the action sequences are a bonus. Rent it on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu or YouTube.

IF YOU’RE INTO MUSICALS: MAMMA MIA!

This 2008 adaption of the ABBA jukebox musical is an hour and 48 minutes of unbridled joy with a side of Meryl Streep. She and a cast featuring Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Christine Baranski are dancing queens in scenic Greece for a wedding, where the father of the bride could be one of three men. High jinks and love ballads ensue. Stream it on HBO Go/ Now.

IF YOU LIKE MOVIES ABOUT FEMALE FRIENDSHIP AND ALSO SURFING: BLUE CRUSH

Blue Crush is a breezy film about a group of female surfers, and the pro football player one of them falls for. Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez lead the cast that’s having as much fun as you are watching them. Stream it on Showtime Anytime.

IF YOU LOVE DISNEY ANIMATION AND FAMILY THEMES: LILO AND STITCH

If you want something you can watch with your entire family, this underrated Disney animated film is a classic. The Hawaii- set film, about a murderous alien who crashes on Earth and learns to love an outcast girl, is as heartwarming and affecting as Frozen or Beauty and the Beast. Stream it on Netflix.
