Yanks score despite Frazier’s triple play

-

Former White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier had an unforgettable first at- bat in his home debut at Yankee Stadium, grounding into a rare run- scoring triple play as the New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 4- 2 on Tuesday night.

With three on and no outs in the second inning, Frazier hit a hard grounder up themiddle that shortstop Jose Peraza gloved. Peraza quickly stepped on second and threw to first.

Didi Gregorius, who had been on second base, held up when the ball was hit in case it was caught. He was late to advance, and first baseman Joey Votto’s throw across the diamond caught him in a rundown. Gregorius was called out for running wide of the baseline trying to avoid a tag. A run scored because Matt Holliday scampered home before Gregorius was trapped.

It was the first time a team scored on a triple play since the Mariners did against the Twins in 2006.

Travis Shaw, Eric Thames and Manny Pina homered, Zach Davies tossed 7‰ scoreless innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the host Washington Nationals 8- 0. Shaw’s three- run blast highlighted a four- run fourth inning. Thames and Pina went back- to- back off Edwin Jackson in the fifth.

The Nationals hope Stephen Strasburg will make his next scheduled start after exiting his outing Sunday after two innings with pain in his forearm. The right- hander met with team doctors but did not undergo an MRI exam.

Whit Merrifield homered on the first pitch of the game, and the visiting Kansas City Royals led the rest of the way, beating the Detroit Tigers 3- 1 for their seventh consecutive victory.
