Dolphins weigh options at QB
Miami exploring treatments for Tannehill’s knee
The Miami Dolphins continue to gather as much information as they can on injured quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s left knee, but for the moment, the team is in a holding pattern.
That means that backupMattMoore becomes the team’s short- term starter.
“Right now, Matt is our quarterback,” Dolphins coach Adam Gase told reporters Friday as he walked off the field after a practice. “We’ll see where we go from there because I’ve got to figure out what’s going on with Ryan. And then we’ll make a decision after that.” That, however, could change quickly. Tannehill suffered a non- contact injury in Thursday’s practice, when he scrambled to his right toward the sideline, planted with his left foot, and had his knee buckle. He immediately left the field, and the team took Tannehill for anMRI.
The result reportedly revealed no structural damage to his knee ligaments, but because this is a recurring injury, Tannehill is expected to be sidelined indefinitely.
Gase said surgery was an option and added that the team is “talking to a lot of people” to gather second and third opinions. At the same time, Gase said avoiding surgery is also an option.
He added that there is no timetable on when the team might make a decision.
“Everything is on the table,” Gase said. “We’re going to talk to a lot of people.”
Tannehill suffered a similar injury in a Week 14 game against the Arizona Cardinals, in which he sprained his anterior cruciate ligament and his medial collateral ligament.
Tannehill and the Dolphins opted not to have surgery to repair the ligaments, which had been partially torn. Tannehill had stem cell treatments this offseason to help heal the injury.
“It’s hard,” Moore told reporters as he left practice. “As a buddy and teammate, you never want to see that happen. This is part of my role and I’ve done this before and stepping up and being ready if need be. So that’s asmuch as I know and kind of the attitude I havemoving forward.”
If Tannehill is out for an extended period of time, which seems likely with or without surgery, the Dolphins would likely add another quarterback to provide depth at the position.
Gase wouldn’t commit to any specific players or even the idea that the team would add anyone.
For now, Brandon Doughty and David Fales are the other quarterbacks on the Dolphins roster.
