Braves put end to Cards’ streak

-

R. A. Dickey ( 8- 7) allowed one run in seven innings, Brandon Phillips hit a two- run home run and the visiting Atlanta Braves ended the St. Louis Cardinals’ eight- game winning streak with a 6- 3 victory Sunday.

Dickey, a 42- year- old knuckleballer, scattered seven hits to help the Braves break a five- game losing streak. They beat the Cardinals for the first time in six tries this season and avoided getting swept in the season series.

Losing pitcher Michael Wacha ( 9- 5) yielded four runs and eight hits in five innings. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before allowing two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Rafael Devers tied the score with a homer on a 102.8 mph pitch from Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning, and Andrew Benintendi singled home the tiebreaking run in the 10th to lift the Boston Red Sox past the host New York Yankees 3- 2.

Red Sox starter Chris Sale struck out 12 in seven innings, the 16th time this season he fanned 10 or more batters in a game.

The Washington Nationals said outfielder Bryce Harper suffered a serious bone bruise but no ligament damage in his left knee when he slipped on first base in the first inning Saturday against the visiting San Francisco Giants. General manager Mike Rizzo said there is no timetable for Harper’s return.

Colorado Rockies right- hander Chad Bettis will complete his comeback from cancer when he makes his season debut Monday against the Braves at Coors Field. Bettis finished his last round of treatment in May, two months after doctors discovered his testicular cancer had spread.

The rebuilding San Diego Padres gave manager AndyGreen a three- year extension that runs through the 2021 season. Green has a 119- 160 record since becoming the Padres’ manager before last season.
