-

Quarterback Cam Newton threw passes during team drills for the first time in two weeks Sunday as the Carolina Panthers wrapped up their training camp atWofford College.

Newton participated in red- zone drills but didn’t throw any long passes as he continues to rehab from soreness in his right ( throwing) shoulder stemming from rotatorcuff surgery in March.

Coach Ron Rivera said after practice that it was a ‘‘ good step’’ for Newton, according to the Panthers’ website.

‘‘ It was very positive,’’ Rivera said. ‘‘ A lot of good things happened today. I’m pleased with his progress.’’

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Marqise Lee was carted off the practice field with an injury to his right leg, a potentially significant setback for a team already without rookie running back Leonard Fournette.

Lee fell to the ground during seven- on- seven drills and immediately grabbed the leg. The lower part of the leg was immobilized before he was taken off the field on a cart. Coach Doug Marrone had no update on Lee’s condition after practice.

The injury came hours after the Jaguars shut down Fournette, who has a foot injury Marrone called ‘‘ a nagging issue.’’

Ajayi broke out in 2016, when he ran for 1,272 yards and had back- to- back 200- yard games.
