Trump again blasts Comey for ‘ rigged’ probe
Former FBI chief ended investigation of Hillary Clinton early, report says
President Trump renewed his beef with former FBI director James Comey on Twitter on Friday, complaining his exoneration of Hillary Clinton shows the system is “rigged.”
The impetus for Trump’s latest rebuke: a report from two GOP senators alleging Comey was prepared to absolve Clinton before key interviews in the investigation were over. The FBI was looking into Clinton’s use of a private email server containing classified information and her deletion of 33,000 emails from that server.
“Wow, looks like James Comey exonerated Hillary Clinton long before the investigation was over ... and so much more. A rigged system!” Trump tweeted Friday.
OnWednesday, two Republican senators— Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina — wrote to the new FBI director seeking new information about the probe.
The senators say Comey’s apparent decision not to pursue charges against Clinton before key interviews were concluded is “no way to run an investigation.”
Grassley and Graham based the allegations on redacted transcripts of interviews with FBI agents obtained by the Senate Judiciary Committee, showing Comey was drafting an exoneration statement two months before delivering it in July 2016. “That was long before FBI agents finished their work,” they said in a letter to new FBI Director Christopher Wray. “The outcome of an investigation should not be prejudged while FBI agents are still hard at work trying to gather the facts.”
