MAN DROWNS IN RIVER TRYING TO HELP WOMAN

A man died Sunday morning after he fell into the Chicago River near the Chinatown neighborho­od on the South Side, police said.

Chicago Fire Department divers responded about 1: 20 a. m. to a report of a male who fell into the river near Cermak Road and Canal Street, fire officials said.

Police said the 45- yearold man fell off the Cermak Road Bridge while trying to a help a 52- year- old woman, who was just under the bridge at the time.

He was pulled from the water about 2: 15 a. m. and taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where hewas pronounced dead, authoritie­s said. Sun- TimesWire

Three men were killed and at least 18 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between late Friday and Sunday night, marking a deadly start to the city’s Labor Day weekend.

The three deaths were the latest casualties of Chicago’s gun violence that has taken the lives of at least 434 people since the start of the year, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun- Times.

The latest killing happened about 8: 40 p. m. Sunday when aman was found shot in a vehicle in theWashing­ton Heights neighborho­od on the Far South Side, according to Chicago Police. The man was found in the driver’s side of a vehicle in the 800 block ofWest 102nd Street with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died. Man stabbed walking with sister

A 20- year- old man was stabbed Saturday night while walking with his sister in the Humboldt Park neighborho­od on theWest Side.

At 7: 59 p. m., he and his sister were walking down the street in the 2500 block ofWest Division when an unknown woman, thought to be 20- 30, ran up and stabbed him in the shoulder, according to Chicago Police. She ran away. Theman took himself to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was in good condition, police said. Sun- TimesWire

2 injuredwhe­n van flips

Two men were hospitaliz­ed Sunday when a van flipped over and crashed into a CTA bus shelter to avoid crashing into another vehicle on the NearWest Side.

At 1: 43 a. m., the conversion­style van was speeding eastbound in the 2300 block ofWest Madison Street towardWest­ern when an unknown vehicle turned onto Madison from a parking lot, according to Chicago Police.

The van’s driver swerved to avoid the vehicle, which caused the van to flip and roll multiple times, striking trees and a CTA bus shelter, police said. The other vehicle was not hit and drove off.

The van’s driver, a 23- yearoldman, was taken in “grave” condition to Stroger Hospital, police said. A 22- year- old man passenger received stitches to his face, police said, while a 25- year- old passenger refused treatment. JacobWitti­ch
