Brewers inch closer behind Suter, Braun

Brent Suter pitched five efficient innings, Ryan Braun hit a solo homer in the fourth and the Brewers beat the Pirates 3- 0 on Monday night in Pittsburgh to gain ground in the National League playoff chase.

The Brewers pulled to within 3 ½ games of the Cubs in the NL Central and two games behind the Rockies for the final NL wildcard spot. Both the Cubs and Rockies were off.

Suter ( 3- 2) allowed five hits and struck out four, throwing just 64 pitches before handing off to the bullpen. Five relievers split the final four innings, with Corey Knebel pitching the ninth for his 36th save in 41 tries.

Red Sox 10, Orioles 8 ( 11)

Andrew Benintendi hit a two- run single in the 11th and Mookie Betts had four RBI as the visiting Red Sox won for their ninth victory in 12 games. Xander Bogaerts homered and scored three runs for the Red Sox, who maintained their three- game lead over the second- place Yankees in the American League East. They erased a five- run deficit with a six- run fifth inning and needed 10 pitchers to beat the Orioles, who have lost 10 of 12.

Athletics 8, Tigers 3

Tigers reliever Jeff Ferrell left in the eighth inning after getting hit in the right side of his head with a 102.6 mph line drive off the bat off Ryon Healy in Detroit. Ferrell never went down but jogged toward the dugout and was escorted to the clubhouse. He was taken to a hospital for a precaution­ary CT scan.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 3

Aaron Altherr hit a grand slam, the first ever given up by Clayton Kershaw, as the host Phillies defeated the Dodgers. The Phillies have been a thorn in the side of Kershaw ( 17- 4), who dropped to 3- 5 in his career against them.

The Dodgers’ Chris Taylor and Justin Turner led off the game with consecutiv­e homers.

† Giancarlo Stanton hit his 55th homer and drove in four runs to help the Marlins beat the visiting Mets 13- 1.

Orioles minor- leaguer killed

Miguel Gonzalez, 21, a minorleagu­e pitcher in the Orioles organizati­on, died of injuries sustained in a car accident in the Dominican Republic lastweeken­d. He had pitched for the Orioles in the Dominican Summer League the last three seasons.
