Wade thanks Bulls, Chicago as he leaves

-

After agreeing to a $ 16 million buyout Sunday with the Bulls, becoming a free agent and agreeing to terms on a one- year, $ 2.3 million contract Wednesday to reunite with good friend LeBron James on the Cavaliers, Dwyane Wade released a statement thanking Chicago for his one season in his hometown.

‘‘ I’ve always dreamed of playing for the Chicago Bulls, and I feel so fortunate to have fulfilled my dream this past year,’’ Wade wrote. ‘‘ The team is now heading in a different direction, which has made me re- evaluate where I need to be in this phase of my career. Being a part of a team that is in the process of rebuilding doesn’t align with where I want to be right now, no matter how difficult that decision may be.

‘‘ I am very grateful to the Bulls organization, my fans and the Chicago community for welcoming me home with open arms. It meant so much to me seeing my mom on the sidelines, cheering me on as a Bull. I am so proud of the work we have been doing in the community, and we plan to continue these efforts. It’s been an honor and a privilege to play for my hometown. Chicago holds a very special place in my heart and will always be home to me.’’

Wade averaged 18.3 points in almost 30 minutes in his one season with the Bulls before the buyout freed him to go anywhere he wanted. He ended up with the Cavs.

‘‘ I’m excited for Dwyane to get the opportunity to go compete for a championship again,’’ Bulls coach Hoiberg said. ‘‘ Dwyane being in this stage of his career, to have that opportunity is important to him.

‘‘[ And] I think it’s great for the Cavs. He’s going to an established situation, and he’s going to play with a guy that he has great chemistry with and won championships with in LeBron. I’m excited for Dwyane’s opportunity.’’
