Vogt, Anderson keep Crew alive

Stephen Vogt homered and drove in three runs, Chase Anderson ( 12- 4) allowed one run and three hits in seven innings, and the visiting Brewers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 5- 3 victory Friday against the Cardinals.

The result kept the Brewers two games behind the Rockies in the battle for the second National League wild- card spot with two games left. The Brewers have to win their last two regular- season games and hope the Rockies lose their last two to force a one- game playoffMon­day.

Losing pitcher John Gant ( 0- 1), who was making only his second start of the season, allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings for the Cardinals.

Chad Bettis ( 2- 4) allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, and the host Rockies hit four home runs en route to drubbing the Dodgers 9- 1 and reducing their magic number for clinching the second NL wild card to one.

Nolan Arenado, Mark Reynolds, Charlie Blackmon and Trevor Story homered for the Rockies. Blackmon also set a major- league record with 101 RBI from the leadoff spot, breaking the mark of 100 set by Darin Erstad in 2000.

The Phillies said Pete Mackanin won’t return as their manager next season but will be back as a special assistant to general manager Matt Klentak. Mackanin took over as the Phillies’ manager midway through the 2015 season and has a 173- 237 record, including 65- 95 this season.

Major League Baseball announced the Phillies and Mets will play a game Aug. 19 at Bowman Field inWilliams­port, Pennsylvan­ia, about fivemiles from the site of the Little League World Series. Bowman Field is the home of the Phillies’ Class A affiliate.

MLB announced it has named its World Series MVP award after Hall of FamerWilli­e Mays.
