MOM CHARGED WITH DUI AFTER CRASHING VEHICLE IN TO POND, LEAVING SON INSIDE

A woman who crashed her SUV into a pond early Sunday in west suburban Aurora, leaving her 6- year- old son trapped inside as it sank, has been charged with drunken driving.

Gladys Ruvira- Garcia, 31, faces three felony counts of DUI, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

About 2: 40 a. m. Sunday, Ruvira- Garciawas driving herNissan Xterra near Diehl Road and Interstate 88 with her sister and three children insidewhen she lost control of the SUV and crashed into a retention pond, according to prosecutor­s.

Ruvira- Garcia, her sister and her two daughters, 15 and 12, were able to escape, but left the 6- year- old boy inside the SUV as it sank into thewater, authoritie­s said.

An Aurora Fire Department Dive Team found the vehicle and boy about 80 feet from shore in about 15 feet of water, and pulled him from the water about 3: 05 a. m., police said. Investigat­ors believe he was in thewater for about 30 minutes.

The boy remained in critical condition in amedically- induced coma Tuesdaymor­ning, authoritie­s said.

Ruvira- Garcia had a blood alcohol content above 0.14, prosecutor­s said.

The arrest of aMexican man for driving without a valid license and a fake passport led north suburban police to drug busts that yielded over 600 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $ 3 million believed to be linked to aMexican cartel.

Jose Avila- Zumadio, 32, of Guadalajar­awas stopped for amoving violation about 4: 15 p. m. Oct. 7 near Route 134 and Fairlawn in Round Lake Park, according to police.

Hewas eventually arrested for not having a valid license, andwhile policewere inventoryi­ng his vehicle, they found 3.25 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $ 15,000, and about $ 1,900 in cash, police said.

An investigat­ion into Avila- Zumadio’s activities, led to searches that turned up nearly 600 pounds of cannabis, with a street value of about $ 3 million; an AR- 15 rifle with advance sighting and a loaded 30- round magazine; three boxes of 20 rounds of ammunition; and $ 6,861 in cash in a storage unit in Round Lake Beach, police said.

Maria T. Villa- Mauleon, 30, of the 400 block of Meadow Green in Round Lake Beach was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis over 5,000 grams, unlawful use of aweapon, possession of aweapon with a valid FOID card, unlawful possession of ammunition, and child endangerme­nt, police said.
