Rizzo MLB’s top humanitarian
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo received the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award for on- field performance and contributions in the community.
The announcement came at the annual Players Choice Awards show in New York, during which Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was named MLB’s most outstanding player for the second consecutive season.
Rizzo was treated for limited stage classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2008. In 2012, he founded the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, which funds pediatric cancer research and supports the families of children with cancer.
Rizzo also won the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award last month for his foundation’s work, giving him a sweep of baseball’s humanitarian awards.
Royals manager Ned Yost remains hospitalized after falling while trying to repair a tree stand on his property in Georgia. Yost, 63, broke his pelvis in the fall.
