Venus Williams was beaten in her opening match at a second consecutiv­e major, the only time in her lengthy, distinguis­hed career she has had such early back- to- back exits.

Williams, a seven- time major champion, had 21 more unforced errors than her opponent in a 6- 4, 7- 5 loss to 85th- ranked Wang Qiang of China on Sunday in Day 1 of the French Open in Paris.

“I mean, nobody plans on this,” Williams said.

Justin Rose closed with a 6- under 64 and finished at 20 under at Colonial for a three- stroke victory over U. S. Open champion Brooks Koepka in the Fort Worth Invitation­al in Texas. Rose won for the ninth time on the PGA Tour and became the fifth player with multiple victories this season. Koepka shot 63, but had started the day four strokes behind Rose in the final group. EmilianoGr­illo carded a 64 and finished third at 16 under.

Kyle Busch won the Coca- Cola 600, becoming the only active driver to win a Cup Series points race at every racetrack on the NASCAR circuit. Busch took the first three stages and led 377 of 400 laps overall at CharlotteM­otor Speedway.
