Fabian McCray is one of Phillips’ highly recruited players, so it was no surprise that he stood out at the recent Rivals Three- Star camp in Glen Ellyn.

“There was great competition, it was a good experience to compete against a lot of other guys who have a bunch of offers,” McCray said.

He measured in at 6- 1, 180 pounds. McCray has seen his recruiting take off in the last year.

McCray is being recruited as an all- around athlete. He plays receiver and defensive back for the Wildcats, the state champions in Class 5A.

McCray now has offers from more than 10 schools, including Illinois, where he had his most recent visit.

“I really liked Illinois,” McCray said. “I saw more of the campus than I did last time. I’m impressed with the new facilities Illinois is adding. I really like the coaches too, I like our relationship. I feel comfortable around them.”

Illinois has piqued McCray’s interest throughout the recruiting process. He has also visited Purdue and Iowa State.

Next up are visits to Minnesota and probably Kentucky.

Garrett one to watch

Hinsdale South quarterback Marquese Garrett also has been opening eyes on the camp circuit.

The 6- 2, 200- pounder impressed in Glen Ellyn.

“It went well,’’ Garrett said. “I learned more about my footwork. My timing and accuracy got better.”

Although he’s only a sophomore, he’s starting to draw interest and mail.

“I’ve been hearing from a few schools, but they can’t really talk to me until my junior year,” Garrett said.

“I’d like to hear more from Northern Arizona, Minnesota and Duke.”

Other standouts

Westinghouse defensive back Tryvis Ousley also felt he improved.

“When we did best on best, they put me with the top defensive backs against the top receivers, so that was an accomplishment for me,” the 6- 1, 185- pound junior said. “I felt like I got better at this camp, and I needed it.”

Defensive back Joel Barrows of Brooks also turned heads.

“It went better than I expected,” Barrows said. “Not a reception on me today. I really worked on my technique and our defensive back coaches were really good. Shoutout to them.”
