Hospitalized Renteria feels better
White Sox manager Rick Renteria was feeling better after being taken to a Minneapolis hospital for precautionary reasons after he complained of feeling lightheaded before the White Sox’ 8-5 victory Monday night against the Twins.
Renteria, 56, was at Target Field when he began to feel under the weather.
He was being evaluated and undergoing tests at Hennepin County Medical Center during the first few innings but communicated to Sox officials that he was feeling good and was hoping to return to the ballpark.
Bench coach Joe McEwing assumed managerial duties in Renteria’s absence.
“Our thoughts and prayers were with him the whole evening,” McEwing said. “He’s always in our mind. He’s an amazing leader and person.”
Renteria will remain hospitalized overnight for further evaluation.
The Sox were in Minneapolis on a one-night trip to play the makeup of a game that was snowed out in April.
The game, which was scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m., started after a 33-minute rain delay.
Jose Abreu doubled in two runs and Tim Anderson and Matt Davidson each singled in a run to power the Sox’ offense against left-hander Stephen Gonsalves (0-1). Davidson added a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Right-hander Lucas Giolito (9-9) pitched six innings of three-run ball.
He allowed an RBI double by Tyler Austin in the second, a two-run homer by Jake Cave in the fourth, walked two batters and fanned six.
“Got to the field and I noticed Ricky wasn’t here, and that’s obviously concerning,” Giolito said. “We just grinded through it without our manager. Joe’s done a fantastic job in the situations he’s had to manage, and the team came together and got a good win.”
Juan Minaya pitched two scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing no hits.
Center fielder Leury Garcia was helped off the field in the fourth inning after appearing to injure his left hamstring chasing a deep fly ball. Garcia was replaced by Adam Engel.
