Dodgers reach playoffs again

-

Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig hit home runs, Manny Machado tripled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning and the visiting Dodgers locked up their sixth consecutive trip to the postseason with a 10-6 victory Saturday against the Giants.

The result enabled the Dodgers to clinch no worse than a National League wild-card berth, but they still can win the NL West. They are tied with the Rockies for first place with one game left and, if the teams still are deadlocked after Sunday, will host a one-game tiebreaker Monday to determine who wins the division and who settles for a wild card.

The Dodgers’ victory also eliminated the Cardinals from playoff contention.

♦ Juan Soto drove in four runs with a homer and a double, Trea Turner went 3-for-6 with a homer and three RBI and the Nationals drubbed the host Rockies 12-2. The loss ended the Rockies’ eightgame winning streak and dropped them into a tie with the Dodgers atop the NL West.

Yankees set single-season HR record

The Yankees set a Major League Baseball record for the most homers in a season with 265 when Gleyber Torres connected in the fourth inning of their 8-5 victory against the host Red Sox. The previous mark of 264 had been held by the 1997 Mariners.

Giancarlo Stanton added to the total with a homer over the Green Monster in the seventh. As he rounded second base, he was hit by a one-hop throw from the fan who caught the ball. He turned his head, smiled and appeared to tip his cap to the fan, who was ejected from the ballpark.

The Yankees’ 100th victory means it’s the first time in history three teams from the same league — the American, in this case — reached the milestone.

Mets’ Wright gets ovation in last game

Mets third baseman David Wright went 0-for-1 with a walk and handled one defensive chance without a problem before being lifted to a long, loud ovation in the fifth inning against the visiting Marlins.

The game likely was the last of his career for Wright, 35, who returned to the majors last week for the first time since May 2016 after a two-year run of injuries.

MLB hands Yanks’ Sabathia 5-game suspension

MLB suspended Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia for five games, effective at the start of next season, for hitting Rays catcher Jesus Sucre with a pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday.

Rays right-hander Andrew Kittredge, who had come up and in to Yankees catcher Austin Romine in the top of the inning, was suspended for three games.
