The Rangers in­ter­viewed Joe

Gi­rardi on Fri­day in their search for a new man­ager. The for­mer Yan­kees and Mar­lins man­ager was the first per­son with big-league man­age­rial ex­pe­ri­ence to in­ter­view to re­place Jeff Banis­ter, who was fired last month.

The Rangers al­ready have in­ter­viewed Cubs bench coach Bran­don Hyde, Astros bench coach Joe Es­pada and Rangers as­sis­tant gen­eral man­ager Jayce Tin­gler.

Gi­rardi, who won three World Series ti­tles as a Yan­kees player, man­aged the Yan­kees to a World Series crown in 2009. He had a 910710 record over 10 sea­sons in New York from 2008 to 2017.

The Yan­kees did not re­new his con­tract af­ter they lost to the even­tual World Series cham­pion Astros in a seven-game Amer­i­can League Cham­pi­onship Series last Oc­to­ber.

Gre­go­rius will need Tommy John surgery on his right el­bow af­ter in­jur­ing him­self in the AL Divi­sion Series. The team said in an un­ex­pected an­nounce­ment that surgery has not yet been sched­uled.

The Di­a­mond­backs, who have played on nat­u­ral grass since their in­cep­tion in 1998, are switch­ing to an ar­ti­fi­cial sur­face at Chase Field in time for the 2019 sea­son.
