Tucker’s miss a hit for Saints

-

Justin Tucker missed the first extra point of his career after Joe Flacco (23-for-39, 279 yards) threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to John Brown with 24 seconds left, and the Saints escaped with a 24-23 victory against the Ravens on Sunday in Baltimore.

Tucker had made all 222 extra points in his career and was the only kicker without a miss (112-for-112) since the placement of the ball was moved from the 2-yard line to the 15 in 2015.

“I can’t tell you exactly what happened,” Tucker said, “but at the end of the day, I feel like I cost us the game.”

Alvin Kamara had a two-yard touchdown run and Drew Brees threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Michael Thomas with 4:58 left to help rally the Saints from a 10-point deficit.

In the first quarter, Brees (22for-30, 212 yards) threw a oneyard pass to Benjamin Watson for his 500th career touchdown pass, joining Peyton Manning (539), Brett Favre (508) and Tom Brady (504) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to accomplish that feat.

Panthers 21, Eagles 17

Trailing 17-0 in the fourth quarter, the visiting Panthers scored three touchdowns — a Curtis Samuel 14-yard run, a Devin Funchess 18-yard pass from Cam Newton, and a Greg Olsen one-yard pass from Newton — to stun the Eagles.

The Eagles got the ball back at their own 30 with 1:17 to play, but after a 48-yard pass-interference penalty, the Eagles stalled. On fourth-and-two from the Panthers’ 14, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (30-for-37, 310 yards) was sacked by Julius Peppers.

During the pregame coin flip, Panthers safety Eric Reid instigated a confrontation with Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, fallout from differences of opinion about The Players Coalition, a group meant to address social issues initially brought up by Colin Kaepernick.

“We believe a lot of players should have stepped up for Colin,” Reid said. “I believe Malcolm capitalized on the situation. He co-opted the movement that was started by Colin to get his organization funded [by the NFL]. It’s cowardly. He sold us out.”

“I’m not going to get up here and say anything negative about that man,” Jenkins said. “I respect him. I’m glad he has a job. I’m glad he’s back in the league. I’ll leave it like that.”

Redskins 20, Cowboys 17

Cowboys kicker Brett Maher missed a 52-yard field goal as time expired as the host Redskins survived. The kick was originally a 47-yarder, but a false start pushed it back five yards.

Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan’s strip-sack of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was recovered for a touchdown by Preston Smith with 4:55 remaining to give the Redskins a 20-10 lead.

The Redskins limited Ezekiel Elliott, the NFL’s No. 2 rusher entering the week, to 34 yards on 15 carries. He ran 10 times for only 13 yards in the first half.

Rams 39, 49ers 10

Todd Gurley (15 carries, 63 yards) scored three touchdowns and Jared Goff threw two touchdown passes as the visiting Rams improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1985. The Rams had two interceptions of 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard and recovered two fumbles, resulting in 24 points. The 49ers have committed 14 turnovers since their last takeaway.

Bucs 26, Browns 23 (OT)

After missing a 40-yard field goal at the end of regulation, Bucs kicker Chandler Catanzaro nailed an overtime-record 59-yarder to lift the host Bucs.
