Clarkin goes from Cubs back to Sox

-

Just six days after the Cubs claimed Ian Clarkin off waivers from the White Sox, the left-handed pitcher is back with the South Siders.

On Monday, the Sox claimed Clarkin off waivers from the Cubs.

The Sox originally acquired Clarkin in July 2017, when they traded All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier and right-handers Tommy Kahnle and David Robertson to the Yankees. Along with Clarkin, the Sox received righthander Tyler Clippard and outfielders Blake Rutherford and Tito Polo.

Clarkin, 23, whom the Yankees selected 33rd overall in the 2013 draft, has yet to break into the majors. Last season, he went 4-5 with a 4.76 ERA in 25 games (12 starts) with Class A Winston-Salem and Class AA Birmingham.

♦ Third baseman Josh Donaldson agreed to a one-year, $23 million contract with the Braves. Donaldson was the AL MVP with Toronto in 2015 but has struggled since. He hit .246 with eight homers and 23 RBI in 52 games in 2018 for the Blue Jays and the Indians, who acquired him Aug. 31.

Also, seven-time Braves All-Star Brian McCann agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract to return to the team.

♦ The Twins claimed first baseman C.J. Cron off waivers from the Rays, adding an accomplished replacement for the retired Joe Mauer.

♦ Jim Riggleman was hired by the Mets to be manager Mickey Callaway’s bench coach. Riggleman has managed the Padres (1992-94), Cubs (199599), Mariners (2008), Nationals (2009-11) and Reds (2018). He’s a 726-904 (.445) for his career.

♦ Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray said he’s preparing to move on from football and start his baseball career with the Athletics.
