NU blows big lead but beats Ga. Tech

Ryan Taylor scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, and Northweste­rn built a 28-point lead early in the second half before holding off Georgia Tech 67-61 on Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at WelshRyan Arena. The conference­s split 14 games over three days.

Vic Law added 14 points and nine rebounds and Dererk Pardon 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (6-1), who opened a 50-22 lead with 16 minutes left but struggled at both ends of the court after that.

Jose Alvarado scored 24 points to lead the Yellow Jackets, who shot 37.7 percent from the field.

♦ Eli Cain led five players in double figures with 26 points, and DePaul shot 55.4 percent from the field on its way to an 83-73 victory against Cleveland State at Wintrust Arena. Jalen Coleman-Lands added 15 points, Paul Reed and Femi Olujobi 11 and Jaylen Butz 10 for the Blue Demons (4-1).

♦ Lamarr Kimble scored 31 points, and Saint Joseph’s outscored UIC 36-12 from the free-throw line en route to an 89-75 victory in Philadelph­ia. Tarkus Ferguson had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Flames (3-4), who led by eight points at halftime but were outscored 57-35 after the break.

♦ Loyola said swingman Lucas Williamson suffered a broken hand during the Ramblers’ loss Tuesday to No. 5 Nevada and will be out until January. He is averaging 8.9 points and 7.1 rebounds.
