MIDWEST FISHING REPORT

-

QUOTE: Steve Palmisano at Henry’s: ‘‘It is all building. Look at the calendar. A lot of stuff is going on.’’

LaSALLE: Hybrid stripers (boat and shore) are the top story from opening days. Lake is open daily from 6 a.m. to sunset. Adrian Medina caught his first hybrids his first time fishing it. Curt Pazdro: ‘‘100 stripers . . . 30 bass.’’ Hybrids of 5 pounds came ‘‘on every cast.’’ One largemouth caught by Pazdro’s son Wyatt went 5 pounds. Larry Jennings got an 18-inch hybrid to go with a couple of nice blues. Jeffrey Ayeski and Mike Berman had a nice batch of hybrids, too.

LAKEFRONT COHO (AND TROUT): Henry’s: Coho with some trout mixed in are starting for powerliners and casters. Park Bait: Saturday was real good at Montrose, but Sunday was slow until wind changed. Then anglers were slamming coho from 2 p.m. on. Slez’s: Coho from ‘‘Cal Park to New Buffalo’’ while trolling with ThinFish, J9 Rapalas and Flicker Shad in top 10 feet. For shore guys, it’s skein on the bottom or crawlers, squid or shrimp under floats. A few casting. Michigan City best for shore guys.

CATCH-AND-RELEASE TROUT: Illinois’ early catch-and-release spring trout season opens Saturday (the general trout season opens April 6) at nine statewide sites. Nearby sites are Rock Creek at Kankakee River SP, Apple River at Apple River Canyon SP and Pine Creek at White Pines Forest SP.

AREA LAKES: It went from ice fishing to open water in the last week. Henry’s: Crappie starting at Wolf Lake and forestpreserve lakes. AREA RIVERS: CHICAGO: Warming slowly through the

30s. DES PLAINES: Upper end coming off flood. ILLINOIS: Projected to fall below flood stage this week at Starved Rock. KANKAKEE: High but fishable.

CHAIN/FOX: Boating is closed on the Chain O’Lakes and the Fox River from the Algonquin Dam to the Wisconsin line. Flood crests have been reached, and little additional precipitation is expected in coming days. Check closure updates at foxwaterway.com or call Triangle at (847) 395-0813. COOLING LAKES/STRIP PITS: MAZONIA/BRAIDWOOD: Open daily 6 a.m. to sunset. LaSALLE: Opening recap at top. Open

daily 6 a.m. to sunset. HEIDECKE: Reopens April 1. NORTHERN WISCONSIN: MINOCQUA: Kurt Justice: Travel a little better with snow knocked down some. Bluegills very good in 8 to 10 feet. Crappie (best in 12 to 20 feet) and perch (best deep, but should pull shallower) are good.

NORTHWEST INDIANA: Lakefront coho/trout at top. Slez’s: Steelhead good in Trail on Voodoo jigs tipped with beemoths or on spawn sacs under floats. A few on in-line spinners.

ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN: Tackle Haven: Coho and browns starting off the pier on spawn or crawlers.

SHABBONA: Lakeside: Ice fishing done. Lakeside is open
