CUBS 6, MARINERS 4 ROYALS 8, CUBS 6
Look who’s back
Tuesday’s game against the Mariners was the first for catcher Willson Contreras since he hurt his ring finger five days earlier when righthander Yu Darvish hit him with a pitch. He went 1-for-2 with an RBI and also stole second in the fifth inning.
He’s outta here
Home plate umpire Alfonso Marquez ejected reliever Carl
Edwards Jr. in the sixth after he hit the Mariners’ Austin
Nola with a pitch. Edwards reacted by throwing his arms up in apparent disbelief. Edwards’ pitch came after
Kris Bryant and Contreras were hit by pitches in the third and fifth innings, respectively.
Edwards replaced Darvish in the fifth, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing a solo homer to Kyle Lewis.
Heyward has a day
Jason Heyward finally found some rhythm at the plate against the Mariners. Entering 3-for-24 (.125), he went 2-for-3 and hit an RBI double on a line drive to right.
Hatch hammered
Right-hander Thomas
Hatch allowed eight runs (seven earned) and six hits, walking two, in two innings in the night game against the Royals, giving him a gruesome spring ERA of 31.50. Much of that shellacking involved Ryan
O’Hearn, who doubled in two runs in the first, scored on
Frank Schwindel’s single and added a two-run homer in the second. Billy Hamilton also scored on Addison Russell’s error in the second. Mark
Zagunis homered in the third for the Cubs.
