Dosunmu announces return to Illini

Ayo Dosunmu announced via Twitter that he will return to Illinois for his sophomore season.

The 6-5 guard from Morgan Park averaged 13.8 points, four rebounds and 3.3 assists in 31.1 minutes in his freshman season, in which the Illini went 12-21 overall and 7-13 in the Big Ten.

‘‘I stay home to help coach [Brad] Underwood turn the Illinois program around,’’ Dosunmu said in a video posted to Twitter. ‘‘We will be better. I will be better. And that starts now.’’

Illinois last went to the NCAA Tournament in 2013.

♦ Texas Tech guard Jarrett Culver declared for the NBA Draft. He averaged 18.5 points and led the Red Raiders to the national championsh­ip game.

Jordan lauds Woods

One legend had high praise for another. In a published interview, Michael Jordan said that Tiger Woods’ one-stroke victory in the Masters was ‘‘the greatest comeback I’ve ever seen.’’

‘‘I never thought he’d get back physically,” Jordan said. “He didn’t think he’d get back physically. But he did it. No one expected him to be back the way he is. He’s probably the only person who believed he could get back.”

It was Woods’ 15th major win but first since 2008.

♦ Shane Lowry shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead in the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Top-ranked Dustin Johnson, coming off a second-place tie at the Masters last week, rallied with two birdies in his final seven holes for a 68.

Davis signs extension

A’s designated hitter Khris Davis (.260, 10 homers, 20 RBI) signed a two-year, $33.75 million extension that will take him through the 2021 season. Davis, who had a league-best 48 homers last season, agreed to a one-year, $16.5 million contract in January and would have been eligible for free agency after this season.
