Pagenaud wins pole for Indy

Simon Pagenaud earned his first career Indianapol­is 500 pole with a four-lap average of 229.992 mph, edging three-time pole winner Ed Carpenter and Spencer Pigot on Sunday. He is the first Frenchman to win the Indy 500 pole in 100 years. Carpenter, also the team owner, will start second while Pigot, the fastest qualifier Saturday, completes the front row and Chevrolet sweep of the top three spots.

Pagenaud, who has 11 career poles, will try to become the 18th Indy 500 winner for Team Penske. Defending race winner Will Power qualified sixth at 228.645.

BASEBALL

Astros’ winning streak ends at 10

Michael Chavis homered, Xander Bogaerts hit a tiebreakin­g double in the seventh inning and the Red Sox averted a sweep against the visiting Astros with a 4-3 victory that snapped the Astros’ 10-game winning streak. Astros outfielder George Springer, who leads the AL with 17 homers, left the game in the fifth with lower back stiffness.

♦ Hyun-Jin Ryu threw seven scoreless innings to extend his major-league-leading streak to 31, Cody Bellinger hit his 17th homer and the visiting Dodgers beat the Reds 8-3. Over the last 22 games, Dodgers starting pitchers are 12-2 with a 2.05 ERA, 144 strikeouts and 18 walks.

♦ Shane Bieber struck out a career-high 15 in his first major-league complete game in the Indians 10-0 victory against the visiting Orioles. At 23 years, 353 days old, he became the youngest Indians pitcher to have at least 15 strikeouts since Greg Swindell did it on May 10, 1987, at age 22.

MISCELLANE­OUS

Kerr scores twice in Red Stars’ win

Samantha Kerr scored in the eighth (Michele Vasconcelo­s assist) and 13th minute (Vanessa DiBernardo) to lead the Red Stars to a 2-1 victory against the Dash in Houston. Emily Boyd made three saves for the Red Stars (3-1-2), who moved into first place in the NWSL.

♦ The Sky waived guard Allazia Blockton. The team has until Thursday to set its 12-player roster.

♦ James Van Riemsdyk, Dylan Larkin and Jack Eichel scored to lead the U.S. past Germany 3-1 at the world hockey championsh­ips in Kosice, Slovakia. The U.S. has won five consecutiv­e games since opening with a 4-1 loss to Slovakia. It closes group play against Canada on Tuesday before the quarterfin­als begin Thursday.

♦ Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to win the Italian Open in Rome. It was the first time in 54 meetings that Nadal won a set 6-0.
