Blood disorder idles Carrasco

-

The Indians announced Wednesday that righthander Carlos Carrasco will be out indefinitely because of a recently diagnosed blood condition. They gave no specifics about Carrasco’s disorder and said any further details will be released at the discretion of him and his family.

The Indians said Carrasco (4-6, 4.98 ERA) had been feeling lethargic for weeks and is taking a leave of absence to ‘‘explore the optimal treatment and recovery options.’’ He had been scheduled to start Wednesday against the Twins before he went on the injured list.

Carrasco is the third Indians starter to be sidelined this season. Right-hander Corey Kluber has been out for more than month with a broken right arm, and right-hander Mike Clevinger is nearing a return after being out since early April with a strained muscle in his back.

On the field

Brian Anderson had three hits, including a grand slam in the third inning, to power the visiting Marlins past the Brewers 8-3 for their fourth consecutive victory.

Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson (0-1) yielded five runs, four hits and three walks in three innings in his first start in 21 months after injuring his pitching shoulder while diving back to first base during a game against the Cubs in September 2017.

♦ David Peralta singled home Eduardo Escobar with the winning run in the 11th inning, and the host Diamondbacks ended the Dodgers’ seven-game winning streak and avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-2 victory.

♦ Adam Haseley drove in the go-ahead run with his first major-league hit in the eighth inning, and the visiting Phillies rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat the Padres 7-5. Haseley had been 0-for-6 with a walk before his tiebreaking hit.

Jays honor Halladay by drafting his son

The Blue Jays selected high school pitcher Braden Halladay, a son of late right-hander Roy Halladay, in the 32nd round of the draft — the round matching his father’s uniform number with the team. The younger Halladay tweeted his thanks but said he’ll honor his commitment to Penn State.

Yanks reliever Betances takes step forward

Yankees reliever Dellin Betances faced hitters for the first time in almost three months, throwing 20 pitches to minor-leaguers in a simulated game in Tampa, Florida. Betances hasn’t pitched in a game since March 17 because of an impingement in his right shoulder.
