Sixers offer Simmons $170M max contract

Simmons a five-year, $170 million maximum extension.
Simmons, the 2016 No. 1 overall pick and 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year, is one of the cornerstone stars for the 76ers. His teammates, including AllStar center Joel Embiid
(five years, $150 million), Tobias Harris (five years, $180 million) and Al Horford (four years, $109 million) have been secured with long-term deals.
Simmons has averaged 16.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.9 assists in two seasons.
♦ Former Kings center Willie CauleyStein is expected to sign with the Warriors, according to ESPN.
♦ Jeff Green and Emmanuel Mudiay each agreed to one-year, $2.5 million deals with the Jazz.
♦ Jared Dudley agreed to a one-year, $2.6 million contract with the Lakers.

Reds rally to beat Brewers in 11th
Christian Yelich hit his MLB-leading 31st homer, but Yasiel Puig homered and scored the winning run in the 11th inning, rallying the Reds to a 5-4 victory over the Brewers.
♦ Charlie Morton struck out six straight batters and a season-high 12 overall, and the Rays beat the Orioles 6-3 for their fourth consecutive win.
♦ Rafael Devers homered twice and matched his career-high with six RBI in the Red Sox’ 10-6 win over the Blue Jays.
♦ The Yankees did not hit a home run for the first time in 32 games, ending their record streak in a 4-2 loss to the Mets.

Serena begins with straight-set win
No. 11 Serena Williams opened her bid for a 24th Grand Slam title with a 6-2, 7-5 straight-set victory over Giulia Gatto-Monticone in the first round of Wimbledon.
Unseeded Maria Sharapova retired with a left wrist injury while trailing 5-0 in the third set.
On the men’s side, No. 2 Roger Federer and No. 3 Rafael Nadal were among the winners to advance to the second round.

Mexico advances to final at Soldier Field
Raul Jimenez scored on a penalty kick in the 93rd minute and Mexico advanced to the final of the Gold Cup with a 1-0 victory against Haiti in Glendale, Arizona.
They will face the winner of U.S.-Jamaica (8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee) at 8 p.m. Sunday at Soldier Field.
♦ Former Loyola star guard Marques Townes was added to the Bulls’ Summer League roster. The Bulls open Summer League play Friday against the Lakers.
♦ UConn’s men’s basketball program was placed on probation for two years and Kevin Ollie was sanctioned individually for violations of NCAA rules during his tenure as coach.
♦ Red Stars forward Sam Kerr was named the NWSL Player of the Week.
