Bulls guard Shaquille Harrison signed a one-year contract to return to the Bulls, a source confirmed Thursday. Harrison, a favorite of coach Jim Boylen, was waived two weeks ago during the Summer League. The Bulls have 16 players under contract and need to get down to 15 by opening day. That can come in a trade involving point guard Kris Dunn or moving the $1.6 million contract of backup shooting guard Antonio Blakeney.

What mattered most to Boylen was that he got his defensive-minded backcourt player back in the mix. Last season, Harrison averaged 6.5 points and 1.2 steals in 73 games.

Raptors All-Star guard Kyle Lowry underwent a procedure to repair a torn tendon in his left thumb. He’s hopeful he can participate in USA Basketball’s training camp in August.

Rockets superstar James Harden purchased a minority stake in the investment group that controls MLS’ Houston Dynamo, the NWSL’s Houston Dash and BBVA Stadium.

Sale snaps Fenway losing streak

Chris Sale struck out 12 in six scoreless innings to earn his first regular-season win at Fenway Park in more than a year, and Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer to lead the Red Sox to a 5-0 win over the Blue Jays.

It was Sale’s 11th double-digit strikeout game of the year and the two hits he allowed were the fewest all season.

Manager Aaron Boone got fired up at a rookie umpire in a profane rant, and the Yankees awoke from a sleepy start to rally past the Rays 6-2 in the opener of a doubleheader sweep. Boone called his hitters “savages” while digging into plate umpire Brennan Miller during a tirade picked up by television microphones.

Bryce Harper tied the score with an RBI single and Rhys Hoskins ripped a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to rally the Phillies to a 7-6 victory over the Dodgers. Phillies closer Hector Neris gestured toward the Dodgers’ dugout and appeared to curse in their direction after getting his 18th save.

The Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg (3-for-3, five RBI) became just the fifth pitcher in the last 50 years to record two hits in an inning, including a homer, and first since Edwin Jackson on April 11, 2010, in a 13-4 rout over the Braves.

Tommy Edman snapped a sixthinning tie with his first career grand slam as the Cardinals beat the Reds 7-4 for their fifth win in six games.

Broncos LB Davis (calf) out 3-4 weeks
