Brewers lose game, Woodruff
Eugenio Suarez hit his second two-run home run of the game with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the visiting Reds, who had squandered a three-run lead the previous inning, to a 6-5 victory Monday against the Brewers.
After the Brewers rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead on a grand slam by Tyler Saladino — his second grand slam in as many days — in the eighth, Jeremy Jeffress couldn’t hold it. After pinch hitter Derek Dietrich struck out, Nick Senzel singled. Jeffress retired Joey Votto on a grounder to third for the second out, but Suarez followed with his blast to left for his 26th homer.
It was a particularly costly day for the Brewers, who earlier learned All-Star right-hander Brandon Woodruff (11-3, 3.27 ERA) might miss up to six weeks with a strained oblique muscle on his left side suffered Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Cardinals outlast Pirates in wild 10th
Paul Goldschmidt hit a tiebreaking grand slam with one out in the 10th inning, and the Cardinals held off a furious rally by the host Pirates in the bottom of the inning to escape with a 6-5 victory.
After the teams traded runs in the third and again in the fourth, the scored remained 2-2 till Goldschmidt’s blast in the 10th. The Pirates, however, responded with three runs and had the tying run thrown out at the plate before falling short.
Twins turn triple play against Yankees
The Twins turned their first triple play since June 2017 in the first inning of their 8-6 victory against the visiting Yankees.
After DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge walked to open the game, Edwin Encarnacion hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Luis Arraez, who stepped on third and threw to second baseman Jonathan Schoop in the same motion. The relay to first baseman Miguel Sano beat Encarnacion by a step.
Pirates activate reliever, then suspend him
The Pirates suspended reliever Keone Kela two games for an unspecified violation of his contract.
The suspension came after the Pirates activated Kela from the 60-day injured list. Kela went on the injured list May 6 with discomfort in his right shoulder and completed a rehab assignment with Class AAA Indianapolis over the weekend.
Journeyman Jackson lands on his feet
Journeyman right-hander Edwin Jackson agreed to a minor-league contract with the Tigers. He was 1-5 with an 11.12 ERA this season for the Blue Jays, who released him Friday.
