Ex-Bears, ND DT Zorich out at Chicago State
Chicago State and former Bears and
Notre Dame star Chris Zorich parted ways, the university said in a statement Tuesday.
It wasn’t clear if Zorich, who was hired as Chicago State’s athletic director in May 2018,
was fired or he resigned.
Jimell Byrd-Reno,
a member of Chicago State’s cabinet, will serve as athletic director on an interim basis, the university said.
Zorich, a Chicago native, was a standout defensive tackle on Notre Dame’s 1988 national championship team and played for the Bears from 1991 to ’96. After his playing career, Zorich ran into financial trouble and was sentenced to three years of probation in 2013 after a federal tax-evasion conviction.

Blazers’ McCollum gets $100M extension
Blazers guard CJ McCollum agreed to a three-year, $100 million contract extension, extending his current deal to five years and $157 million. The new deal will start with the 2021-22 season.
McCollum averaged 21 points in each of the last two regular seasons and 25.3 and 24.7 points, respectively, in the playoffs. He was voted the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2016.
♦ Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson signed a multiyear partnership with NBA 2K. The deal with the video-game giant could be worth as much as $45 million over the next four years. The Timberwolves named Sachin Gupta their executive vice president of basketball operations. Gupta was the Pistons’ assistant general manager last season.

U.S. national coach Ellis stepping down
National-team coach Jill Ellis is stepping down after leading the United States to backto-back Women’s World Cup titles.
Ellis has been coach of the team since 2014 and has led it to eight overall tournament titles, including victories at the World Cup in 2015 in Canada and this month in France.
She will remain with the team for a World Cup victory tour, which kicks off Saturday with a match against Ireland at the Rose Bowl.

Wild fire GM Fenton after one season
The Wild fired general manager Paul Fenton after just one season. Fenton’s lone year on the job included the end of the team’s six-year streak of making the playoffs and a disassembly of the team’s core of forwards by trading Charlie Coyle, Mikael Granlund and Nino Niederreiter before the deadline.
♦ The PGA Tour will reduce the 36-hole cut size from the top 70 players and ties to the top 65 players and ties starting with the 2019-20 season.
♦ Brazilian police said they have decided there are no grounds to bring rape charges against soccer star Neymar. They also are investigating whether his accuser filed a false report.
