Lamet’s 14 K’s lead Padres past Crew

-

Dinelson Lamet struck out a career-high 14 and Kirby Yates fanned pinch hitter Ryan Braun with a runner on second base to close out the Padres’ 2-1 win over the playoff-contending Brewers on Wednesday night in Milwaukee.

The Brewers, who had won four in a row, remain tied with the Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Lamet (3-5), who missed the entire 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, repeatedly hit 97 mph. He struck out five of the first six Brewers batters — three of them on three pitches. Lamet pitched six innings, giving up three hits.

♦ Adam Wainwright put on another sharp performance to top Max Scherzer, right fielder Dexter Fowler made a sensational catch and the NL Central-leading Cardinals beat the Nationals 5-1 on Wednesday in St. Louis.

Wainwright (13-9) has won all four of his starts this month, allowing just one earned run in 27 innings. The 38-year-old righty limited the Nationals to an unearned run in seven innings.

Trailing by four, the Nats put two on with one out in the eighth. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a drive off Andrew Miller that had the distance to leave the park, but Fowler jumped and reached far over the wall to grab it.

Scherzer allowed five runs in 6⅔ innings.

♦ Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole became the 18th MLB pitcher since 1900 to strike out at least 300 batters in a season, and the Astros beat the Rangers 3-2 to lock up a postseason berth.

♦ Pete Alonso hit his major-league-leading 49th homer to give the Mets a franchise-record 225 homers on the season, then drew a bases-loaded walk during a four-run rally in the ninth inning for a 7-4 victory over the Rockies.

♦ Bruce Bochy became just the 11th manager to achieve 2,000 wins in the Giants’ 11-3 victory over the Red Sox.

♦ Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton returned to the starting lineup for the first time in nearly three months and went 1-for-3 in a 3-2 loss to the Angels.

♦ Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez was being held in a Pennsylvania jail on multiple felony charges after allegedly telling investigators he attempted to have sex with an underage girl during a meeting at her house in 2017.

Curry commits to playing in Olympics

Warriors star guard Stephen Curry is committed to playing for Team USA in next summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. It would mark Curry’s first appearance in the Olympics.

♦ Wizards guard Isaiah Thomas is expected to miss six to eight weeks after undergoing thumb surgery.
