Mahomes out for chiefs
The Chiefs ruled out quarterback Patrick Mahomes for Sunday night’s showdown against the Packers because of his dislocated right kneecap. Mahomes, who hurt his knee last Thursday night against the Broncos, was a limited participant in practice all week. The Chiefs decided to give the reigning league MVP at least one game off as he recovers from an injury that can sometimes sideline a player for several months. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after Friday’s walkthrough that Matt Moore would start and rookie Kyle Shurmur will be the backup.
♦ Saints coach Sean Payton has yet to name either Drew Brees or Teddy Bridgewater as his starting quarterback against the Cardinals.
♦ Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan returned to practice from a right ankle sprain and is listed as questionable against the Seahawks.
♦ There will be no update on the status of Redskins quarterback Case Keenum, who left Thursday’s game against the Vikings with a concussion, until Monday.
♦ Jets guard Kelechi Osemele had surgery on his ailing right shoulder despite the team not approving the procedure. The operation to repair a torn labrum was considered an “unexcused absence” by the team.
NBA towns scores 37 in t-wolves’ win
Karl-Anthony Towns had 37 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists, and the visiting Timberwolves beat the Hornets 121-99. He finished 13-for-18 from the field and benefitted from the absence of Hornets center Cody Zeller, who missed the game because of undisclosed personal reasons.
♦ Kyrie Irving scored 26 points and made a go-ahead three-pointer with 21 seconds left after the Knicks had taken a late lead, and the host Nets held on for a 113-109 victory.
♦ Jimmy Butler will miss the Heat’s games against the Bucks on Saturday and the Timberwolves on Sunday after his girlfriend gave birth to a daughter Wednesday.
MISCELLANEOUS red sox poach bloom from rays
The Red Sox reportedly hired Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, 36, to be their chief baseball officer, and Brian O’Halloran will be promoted from assistant general manager to GM.
♦ Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco, who was diagnosed with a treatable form of leukemia in May, won the 2019 Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to recognize a player’s high character, community involvement and positive contributions.
♦ Notre Dame junior wide receiver Michael Young is expected to transfer.
♦ U.S. Soccer is expected to name Vlatko Andonovski as the new coach of the women’s national team. Andonovski, the current coach of the Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League, replaces Jill Ellis.
♦ Organizers of the PGA Tour’s first tournament in Japan have taken the unusual step of closing the course to spectators for Saturday’s second round and extending the tournament until Monday because of torrential rainfall and flooding in the area that washed out the second round Friday. ✶
