Shoeless James defends himself

- BY KEVIN GLEESON

Lakers star LeBron James responded to critical comments made by Jazz announcers Wednesday, when he was seen celebrating on the bench with his shoes off.

The announcers — Matt Harpring and Craig Bolerjack — called James’ behavior “disrespectful,” with Harpring asking, “What the heck is going on?” James was shoeless because he gave his game sneakers to a fan.

James was cheering a play that saw teammate Kyle Kuzma block Jazz center Tony Bradley two straight times.

“Please. This isn’t playground ball,” Harpring said on the broadcast. “They are clowning right now on that bench side.” The Lakers won 121-96.

James posted an Instagram video of the play that sparked the commentary and directly addressed the criticism.

“Imagine doing your job at the highest level to where you’re not needed anymore, giving your shoes to a li’l girl and boy who you inspire and hoped you made proud that night, then cheering on your teammates ’cause you love seeing them succeed more than yourself only to be criticized while doing it,” he wrote.

“People, it’s the world we live in, and you can’t let it ever stop you from your purpose in life. Negativity, bad energy, hate, envy, etc., etc., will try to bring you down throughout your journey, and it’s up to you on how you handle it. I handle it by simply saying “Thank You” with a [smile] on my face and continue to push forward while doing it!”

James left the game with 7:46 left. He had 20 points, 12 assists and four rebounds. He also had a comically blatant travel while bringing the ball upcourt in the first quarter that went uncalled to the consternation of Jazz players.

‘‘I didn’t even know I did it until I saw it at halftime,’’ James was overheard saying on the court in the second half. ‘‘That’s one of the worst ones I’ve ever done in my life.’’

It was James’ first win in Utah since Dec. 8, 2010.
