Loyola rolls past Illinois St.

Tate Hall scored 17 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead Loyola to a 62-50 victory Sunday against Illinois State in Normal.

Keith Clemons was the only other player in double figures for the Ramblers (13-6, 5-1 Missouri Valley Conference), who outscored the Redbirds 13-1 from the free-throw line.

Zach Copeland scored 17 points and

Dedric Boyd 15 for Illinois State (6-12, 1-5), which shot only 37 percent from the field and committed 23 turnovers.

♦ Caleb McConnell scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Rutgers (14-4, 5-2) rallied from an early deficit to earn a 64-56 victory against Minnesota (10-8, 4-4) in Big Ten action in Piscataway, New Jersey. Daniel Oturu led the Golden Gophers with 19 points and nine rebounds.

♦ Greg Lee and Cam Allen each scored 19 points to carry Cal State Bakersfiel­d (9-10, 3-1) to a 72-54 victory against host Chicago State (4-17, 0-6) in Western Athletic Conference play. Rajeir Jones led the Cougars with 17 points.

TENNIS Serena rolls in Aussie opener

Eighth-seeded Serena Williams began her quest for what would be her recordtyin­g 24th Grand Slam singles title with a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Anastasia Potapova in the first round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Other first-round winners included thirdseede­d Roger Federer on the men’s side and third-seeded Naomi Osaka — the defending champion — and seventh-seeded Petra Kvitova on the women’s side.

GOLF Landry wins PGA Tour stop

Andrew Landry shot a 5-under-par 67 to notch a two-stroke victory over hard-closing Abraham Ancer (9-under 63) to capture the PGA Tour event in La Quinta, California. Landry completed 72 holes at 26-under 262.

♦ Lee Westwood closed with a 5-under 67 to earn a two-stroke victory in the Abu Dhabi Championsh­ip in the United Arab Emirates. Westwood finished 72 holes at 19-under 269.
