Kershaw misses opener

-

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw went on the injured list because of a back issue hours before he was scheduled to start Thursday night against the Giants on opening night of the shortened season.

Manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw’s back stiffened up in a weight room workout two days ago. He has been receiving treatment ever since, but the training staff advised against the 32-year-old three-time Cy Young Award winner making his ninth Opening Day start.

Kershaw was replaced by 22-yearold right-hander Dustin May, who will become the first Dodgers rookie to start on Opening Day since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.

Jays might call Baltimore home

The Orioles and the state of Maryland have had talks about the team sharing Oriole Park at Camden Yards with the displaced Blue Jays amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Jays are looking for a major-league park after the Canadian government declined to allow them to play in Toronto and the state of Pennsylvania nixed a deal to play in Pittsburgh.

The governor of Connecticut is pitching, too, to have the Jays play at the Class AA ballpark in Hartford. They are scheduled to play their first home game July 29 against the Nationals.

Hill replaces Odorizzi for Twins

The Twins put right-hander Jake Odorizzi on the 10-day injured list with mild soreness in his upper back. Rich Hill will take Odorizzi’s place the first time through the rotation, which comes Saturday against the White Sox.

Odorizzi, a 2019 All-Star, will be eligible to rejoin the active roster July 30. With a day off Monday, the Twins might not need an additional starter before Odorizzi is cleared.
