Fire winless in last 3

-

Teal Bunbury scored twice in the Revolution’s 2-1 victory over the Fire on Sunday night at Soldier Field.

The Revolution (3-2-5) rebounded from a 2-0 loss to New York City FC on Wednesday night. The Revs have given up just 10 goals in the last 11 games. The Fire (2-6-2) is winless in three games.

Bunbury scored toward the near post in the third minute, shooting between goalie Bobby Shuttleworth’s legs.

“I’m talking all year about the same things, that 1-0 is a goal we shouldn’t concede,” Fire coach Raphael Wicky said. “The first ball, Francisco [Calvo] has to clear [it] away, and then nothing happens there.

“However, the team responded really, really well, played really well, created chances, scored, but we should have won at halftime, that’s a fact.”

Fabian Herbers scored his second goal of the season in the 22nd minute for the Fire, tapping a right-footed shot to the near post that beat goalie Matt Turner.

But Bunbury fired a shot just under the crossbar from distance in the 54th for his fourth goal of the season.

Boris Sekulic and Francisco Calvo missed on headers in the second half as the Fire outshot the Revs 17-9 and won the possession battle 62%-38%. Turner finished with six saves.

“The frustration level is pretty high, I would say,” Herbers said when asked about the Fire not being able to capitalize on several chances. “Again, we played good, we played a very solid game here at home. But I mean we concede an early goal, which is always tough, but I thought the team responded pretty well to that.

“And then you concede a goal like that from Teal Bunbury where he tries to cross the ball and it ends up in the back of the net. Yeah, unexplainable at this point. You keep pushing all game and have the majority of the possession and try to create some chances. But if you concede a goal like that, it’s always hard to come back.”
