Rays clinch AL East for first time since 2010

-

Randy Arozarena homered twice and the Rays clinched their first AL East title in 10 years with an 8-5 victory against the host Mets. It is the third division crown in franchise history for the Rays, who also won the AL East in 2008 and 2010. Joey Wendle and Brandon Lowe also went deep for the Rays, who will be at Tropicana Field for a best-of-three first-round playoff series beginning next Tuesday.

Pitching on short rest, Trevor Bauer allowed four hits and struck out 12 in eight innings in the Reds’ 6-1 victory against the visiting Brewers. Bauer exited with an NL-best 1.73 ERA. The Reds have won nine of 11 to get a shot at its first playoff appearance since 2013 under manager Dusty Baker.

The Padres beat the visiting Angels 5-2, but starting pitcher Mike Clevinger lasted only one inning before being lifted and getting an MRI on his right biceps. Clevinger had been bumped from his start Saturday but pitched a clean bullpen session Monday. Clevinger said his biceps tightened up after he threw a curveball to Jared Walsh, the second batter in his 12-pitch, 1-2-3 first inning.

NL Cy Young Award contender Max Fried lasted just one inning in his final start of the regular season, leaving the Braves’ 9-4 victory against the visiting Marlins after tweaking his ankle fielding a bunt.

Danny Jansen hit two runs in helping the Blue Jays rout the Yankees 14-1, lowering the Jays’ magic number for a playoff berth to one.
