Reports: Trainer’s shot caused punctured lung
Multiple outlets Wednesday reported that quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed the Chargers’ game Sunday against the Chiefs because a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung with a shot.
The Chargers offered no official word about the injury because of medical-restriction issues, but the NFL Players Association said it has been in contact with Taylor and his agent and has started an investigation into the matter.
Coach Anthony Lynn said that Taylor is still not 100% and that rookie Justin Herbert will make his second NFL start Sunday against the Panthers. There was no word about how long Taylor might be out.
‘‘There were complications with the shot, but I know the man [who gave it],’’ Lynn said. ‘‘People make mistakes. It is something we will talk about internally.’’
Taylor was briefly on the Chargers’ injury report Friday because of a rib injury he suffered in the season opener Sept. 13 against the Bengals. He was taken off it, however, after participating fully in practice and taking all of the snaps with the first team.
Lynn said he didn’t find out until less than five minutes before kickoff that Taylor would be unable to play against the Chiefs. Herbert said he found out he was playing right as the Chargers were lining up to receive the opening kickoff.
McCaffrey out at least three games
The Panthers put running back Christian McCaffrey on short-term injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least three games.
McCaffrey suffered a high sprain of his right ankle Sunday against the Buccaneers, an injury that normally requires a four- to six-week recovery period. McCaffrey said Monday that is how long he was told he should expect to miss, but he said he hopes to be back sooner than that.
Packers WR Adams misses practice
Packers receiver Davante Adams sat out practice and said he doesn’t know whether he’ll be able to play Sunday against the Saints after leaving the team’s game Sunday against the Lions with a hamstring injury in the second half.
‘‘It’s too early to tell,’’ Adams said. “It’s feeling better. I think we’re making good progress every day. But we’re just going to wait it out and see.’’
Giants sign RB Freeman
The Giants signed former Falcons running back Devonta Freeman to a reported oneyear, $3 million contract. The announcement came a day after the Giants put star running back Saquon Barkley on injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee suffered Sunday against the Bears.
Jaguars lose kicker to hip injury
The Jaguars put kicker Josh Lambo on short-term injured reserve, which means he will miss at least three games, with a hip injury suffered Sunday against the Titans. Rookie Brandon Wright was called up from the practice squad and will make his NFL debut Thursday against the Dolphins.
