Telander among 7 chosen for NSMA Hall
The National Sports Media Association added a record seven members to its Hall of Fame this week, including Chicago Sun-Times columnist Rick Telander.
Telander headlines a list of sportswriters that also includes boxing writer and sports columnist Larry Merchant, Sports Illustrated writer William Nack and New York Times columnist William C. Rhoden.
Sportscasters Bill King, Jim Nantz and Dick Stockton also were voted into the NSMA Hall.
After a lengthy career at Sports Illustrated, Telander has spent the last 26 years writing columns for the SunTimes.
Telander, a Northwestern graduate who is also an accomplished artist, wrote the book ‘‘Heaven is a Playground,’’ which Sports Illustrated ranked No. 15 in its list of the top 100 sports books of all time in 2002.
The NSMA will honor its Hall of Fame inductees during its 61st awards weekend, which tentatively is set for June 26-28 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
