OOPS. LIGHTFOOT WISHES CITY A HAPPY 185TH BIRTHDAY

- BY MITCH DUDEK, STAFF REPORTER mdudek@suntimes.com | @mitchdudek

If the city of Chicago, all its skyscrapers, bungalows and beef sandwiches could raise a collective eyebrow, it would have Thursday morning when Mayor Lori Lightfoot wished it a happy 185th birthday.

Lightfoot added a year to the city’s birthday tally. Chicago turned 184 Thursday.

A tweet Lightfoot posted marking the incorrect birthday was deleted Thursday after the Chicago Sun-Times asked the mayor’s office for comment.

The tweet contained a video of Lightfoot at Pioneer Court on Michigan Avenue along the Chicago River at the spot where Jean Baptiste Point du Sable established the city’s first settlement.

Chicago was incorporated in 1837. Lightfoot’s office got it right last year, when, in a March 4 news release, it acknowledged the city’s 183rd birthday.

But with that many candles, who’s really counting?
