A good start for Lynn

Righty Lance Lynn has been sharp on the back fields, and he carried that over to his first start, striking out three, walking one and allowing no hits in two innings. Facing a lineup stacked with lefties, Lynn varied speeds on his fastball, hit his spots and said, “No, I don’t care who’s in the box.”

“Everything went well, threw all the pitches I needed to throw and on to the next one, keep building up pitch count,” Lynn said.

Lynn reiterated his excitement about coming to the Sox.

“When you get traded to a team that was in the playoffs the year before and is trying to make the next jump to a World Series contender, it’s exciting,” he said. “And when they think you’re one of the pieces that can get them there, it puts that pressure on you that you enjoy.”

Winless

The Sox fell to 0-3-2, scratching out five hits, although Tim Anderson walked and was robbed twice — once by former Sox prospect Luis Basabe in left field. Andrew Vaughn continued to look good, lining a single to right with a runner on second.

On the plus side

Besides Lynn, Evan Marshall also was sharp, striking out two in a perfect third. Ryan Burr bounced back from a rough outing with three strikeouts in a scoreless inning. The Giants’ runs were scored against non-roster invitee Connor Sadzeck.

Catchers’ competition

Jonathan Lucroy (1-for-2) continued to have good atbats, and Zack Collins struck out in one plate appearance a day after collecting two hits, including a homer. Collins picked off a runner at first and committed a passed ball.

Manager Tony La Russa , on what he’s looking for in a No.2 to back up Yasmani Grandal (still out with a sore knee): “Thinking, calling a good game, that’s priority No. 1.”
